What replaced data.ai (App Annie)?

data.ai, formerly App Annie, now belongs to Sensor Tower. See where its features went and which free app intelligence tools, like AppGazers, fill the gap.

Sensor Tower acquired data.ai, the company formerly called App Annie, in March 2024, and data.ai’s website now shows a login page labelled “a Sensor Tower company”. Sensor Tower now owns data.ai, so existing customers should confirm product, account and contract arrangements with Sensor Tower. For free app-store research on iOS and Google Play, AppGazers is a free-during-beta alternative.

What happened to data.ai and App Annie?

App Annie, founded in 2010, became one of the best-known sources of app download and revenue estimates. It renamed itself data.ai on February 16, 2022, according to data.ai’s own press release (archived copy).

On March 18, 2024, Sensor Tower announced it had acquired data.ai for an undisclosed amount. The release says the deal brought data.ai customers such as Microsoft, Sky and Bandai Namco to Sensor Tower and created a combined base of more than 2,000 enterprise customers.

The same release describes Sensor Tower’s suite as powered by first-party panel data and delivered on an annual subscription model, which is the model former data.ai enterprise customers now buy into.

On October 6, 2026, data.ai’s website opened to a login form with the banner “We’ve Been Acquired by Sensor Tower” and the footer “data.ai, a Sensor Tower company”. There is no public pricing or sign-up offer on that page.

What former App Annie users miss most

Most former users relied on a few core jobs. Each one now has a clear home.

  • Downloads and revenue estimates for any app: Sensor Tower for enterprise accounts, AppGazers for free banded estimates on iOS and Google Play.
  • Top charts and rank history by country: AppGazers stores daily rank snapshots, and AppMagic publishes free top charts.
  • Usage, retention and audience data: Sensor Tower, which builds them from its consumer panel. AppGazers does not offer these.
  • Keyword research: AppGazers scores popularity, difficulty and opportunity by country; Sensor Tower lists keyword rankings in its app performance product.
  • Ad creative: AppGazers shows public Meta (EU/UK) and Google ads; Sensor Tower offers ad intelligence and Pathmatics.

Where AppGazers fits

If you used App Annie to check a competitor, AppGazers can cover that job: it is free during beta, opens after Google sign-in, and covers 5.4 million iOS and Google Play listings as of October 6, 2026.

It shows how uncertain each estimate is. Every revenue and download figure belongs to one stated month (August 2026 as of October 6, 2026) and carries an 80% band, and apps too small to model are labeled “under $5K”.

It also finds new apps early. Rising and trending sorts, release-date filters and alerts on saved apps surface challengers before they top a chart.

What AppGazers does not replace

AppGazers is not a successor to data.ai’s enterprise products. It has no panel-based usage or audience data, no web or console coverage, no country-level revenue estimates and no data feeds for investors.

If your team relied on those, talk to Sensor Tower. If you only need store research, AppGazers covers the essentials without a contract.

Same app, both tools: Calo

Calo: AI Food Calorie Counter, from Next Vision Limited, was released on Google Play on June 27, 2025, according to its Play listing. AppGazers estimated its August 2026 gross in-app spend at about $162K, with an 80% band of $75K to $335K, and downloads of about 337K (179K to 664K). Its lifetime install bracket is 1M+, and its AppGazers rising score was 98.6. Figures as of October 6, 2026.

We did not find a comparable public data.ai estimate for this app, so there is no second number to place beside these. The example shows the kind of young, fast-growing app that free research should surface early.

Choosing a data.ai replacement by team

There is no single replacement, because data.ai served very different buyers. Match the tool to the team.

  • Enterprise strategy, marketing and insights teams: Sensor Tower, which now owns data.ai and sells usage, audience and advertising data through sales.
  • Game studios and smaller publishers: AppMagic, which Sensor Tower acquired in May 2026 to serve small and medium-sized businesses; pricing comes after a demo.
  • Investors and analysts: Apptopia, which maps app data to public-company tickers.
  • Indie developers and early-stage founders: AppGazers, free during beta, for store estimates, rankings, keywords, reviews and public ads.

How to switch from data.ai

If you still have a data.ai or Sensor Tower login, export your old watchlists first.

  • Search each app in AppGazers by name, App Store URL or Play package name and save it to Your apps.
  • Rebuild category views with filters for release date, growth and estimate range.
  • Note the period on every figure you carry into a report.

Frequently asked questions

Is App Annie the same as data.ai?

Yes. App Annie changed its name to data.ai on February 16, 2022, according to data.ai’s own press release.

Does data.ai still exist?

On October 6, 2026, data.ai’s website showed a login page with the banner “We’ve Been Acquired by Sensor Tower” and described itself as a Sensor Tower company.

Who bought data.ai?

Sensor Tower. It announced the acquisition on March 18, 2024, for an undisclosed amount.

What is the best free App Annie alternative?

For free app-store research, AppGazers is free during beta and covers iOS and Google Play rankings, reviews, keywords, public ads and banded revenue and download estimates. It does not include usage or audience data.

Is Sensor Tower the replacement for data.ai?

Sensor Tower owns data.ai, so it is the natural first contact for former enterprise customers, who should confirm with Sensor Tower which products and contract terms now apply. Sensor Tower prices plans through sales.

How much does Sensor Tower cost now that it owns data.ai?

Sensor Tower does not publish prices. Its pricing page says plans are customized for each customer, and its 2024 press release describes delivering insights on an annual subscription model.

Does AppGazers have country-level revenue estimates?

No. AppGazers models worldwide monthly figures (August 2026 as of October 6, 2026) per store listing. A country filter narrows store records, such as ratings and ranks, but does not turn estimates into country-level revenue.

Does AppGazers show app downloads and revenue?

Yes. It shows modeled monthly downloads and gross in-app spend (August 2026 as of October 6, 2026) with an 80% band. These are estimates, not developer-reported figures.
